How can the Cancer Care team help you?
Kaleida Health treats cancer at every step – from preventative screenings to testing, treatment, surgery, radiation and infusion services. By working as a team, we put the best medical minds together to create an individualized treatment plan for each patient to ensure the best possible outcome. Often, patients with cancer have other health challenges. With five major hospitals across Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania, and specialists in every area, we are able to treat cancer and any other conditions that arise – from emergency care to cardiovascular care and beyond.

Kaleida Health Cancer Care screening and diagnosis
The first step of the cancer care path is diagnosis and screening, which may include tests such as CT scans, MRIs, colonoscopies, biopsies and other procedures.
Cancer screening
Screening tests are done when there are no symptoms present. Regular screening tests are highly recommended so that breast, cervical and colorectal (colon) cancers are found early, when treatment is likely to work best. Lung cancer screening is recommended for some individuals who are at high risk.
Examples of common screening tests include:
Mammograms to detect breast cancer
Pap and HPV tests to detect cervical cancer
Colonoscopies to detect colorectal cancer
Low dose CT scans to detect lung cancer
Cancer diagnosis testing
If cancer is detected, your healthcare team will most likely recommend additional follow-up tests to learn more about your cancer diagnosis. Additional tests are necessary to help determine your treatment strategy and rule out other conditions.
Your care team will likely recommend:
A biopsy is a test that involves removing a small amount of tissue to examine under the microscope. Types of biopsies might include a needle, endoscopic, surgical, skin and liquid.
Lab tests might include blood tests for cancer, tissue tests and urinalysis.
Imaging tests are also used to look inside the patient’s body to determine where cancer is present. Physicians might order additional images using Computed Tomography (CT scan), Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Scan, Positron Emission Tomography (PET scan) and X-rays.
The Care We Provide
Cancer patients often have medical treatments, radiation therapy and/or surgery as part of their cancer care path – the three main treatments and therapies for cancer. Your Kaleida Health care team gives you access to experts in all three areas.
Medical oncology
If cancer is diagnosed, you will typically see a medical oncologist. Medical oncologists treat cancer using treatments such as:
Chemotherapy – the use of drugs to kill cancer cells
Immunotherapy – boosting a person’s own immune system to fight cancer
Hormone therapy – used to treat cancers that use hormones to grow
Other drug treatments
Radiation oncology
Radiation therapy is used in the treatment of many cancers. Radiation oncologists use different methods to kill cancer cells, including delivering high energy rays to the tumor from outside the body and implanting radioactive "seeds" directly into the tissue. Kaleida Health radiation oncologists are experts in some of the most advanced technology available. Radiation oncology services are offered with Cancer Care of Western New York and the Mildred Milliman Radiation Medicine Center in Olean.
Surgical oncology
Kaleida Health surgical oncologists treat cancer by surgically removing tumors and surrounding tissues. They also perform biopsies by removing and examining tissue samples. Your care team connects you with the area’s leading surgeons in oncology, performing surgery at Commission On Cancer (COC) accredited hospital facilities.
Kaleida Health Cancer Survivorship Program
Every patient is considered a survivor at diagnosis and throughout the course of their life. The goal of Kaleida Health’s Survivorship Program is to help you stay mentally and physically healthy. After treatment, you can access wellness services including nutrition, physical therapy, support groups and ongoing education. Our partner, GLIN IPA, provides these services in tandem with your providers at Kaleida.

Laboratory Services
The clinical laboratories of Kaleida Health play a critical role in the care of our patients. Without their expertise, physicians wouldn't know whether a disease or condition exists and to what extent. A patient's treatment plan is in large part based on the findings of the our highly specialized team of laboratory scientists and technicians.
Long-term Care
Aging is an inevitable process, a continuous period that can be spiritual, joyous and fulfilling. We can provide a comfortable setting complete with required amenities and services for those who need extra care. Women have a special set of needs that change throughout the life cycle. Women's Services at WCHOB provide comprehensive care for any medical concern. From birthing classes to mammograms, we advance the health of women with dedicated service
Outpatient Centers
Outpatient Centers provide medical care, rehabilitation or tests without the need for an overnight stay in a hospital. In some cases, the experience is similar to a standard visit to your primary care physician. In other cases, testing, rehabilitation or other activities needed for your unique healthcare needs may make your visit a bit longer. Your healthcare provider can give you an estimate of the time you will need to allot for your visit.
Rehabilitation Services
Kaleida Health Rehabilitation programs are designed to provide comprehensive rehabilitation for adults. Our goal is to help patients maximize their recovery from injury or illness with a combination of individualized physical, occupational and speech therapies.
Support Services
Many of our most important services happen behind the scenes. Volunteers, human resources, plant operations and safety, just to name a few, are services that make Kaleida Health the premier health care system in Western New York. Their reinforcement, protection and assistance uphold the mission and goals of our organization.
