What is NSICU Care?
Patients who are recovering from strokes or other neurological procedures are directly admitted to the NSICU, located on the fourth floor of Buffalo General Medical Center, for specialized care after their procedures. This ensures patients have continuous monitoring, advanced critical care support and quick intervention from our expert team if and when needed.
What to Expect from Your Care
- Patients receive around-the-clock expert care.
- A dedicated team cares for each patient, including neurointensivists, advanced practice providers, neurosurgeons, neurologists, nurses and other specialized staff such as occupational therapists, speech language pathologists and more.
- Nursing staff is highly specialized, trained in critical care, stroke care, specialized neurological monitoring and early recognition of neurological decline.
- Nurses are assigned to patients based on the condition of their health and required care.

Your presence means so much to your loved one’s healing journey. Our visiting hours are:
10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
8 p.m. – 10 p.m.
What Should I Know Before Visiting the NSICU?
To help us create a calm and supportive environment for everyone, we kindly ask you to keep a few things in mind during your visit:

Quiet support
To maintain a restful space, we welcome up to two visitors at a time.

Young visitors
For the safety and comfort of our patients, we ask that children under 12 not visit the NSICU.

Phone etiquette
Please silence your phone and keep conversations quiet, especially in the hallways.

Respect privacy
If a door or curtain is closed, a gentle knock before entering is appreciated.

Food and drink
Please enjoy meals in the designated family areas to keep patient spaces clean and comfortable.

Flowers
While thoughtful, fresh flowers are not allowed in the ICU for health reasons.

Medical care
Testing or imaging may occur during your visit, and you might be asked to step out briefly.

Waiting areas
Please wait in the designated NSICU or Surgical ICU waiting areas and avoid standing in the hallways.

Caring for yourself
We encourage you to rest and take care of yourself, too. Your well-being supports your loved one’s healing.
Connecting with the NSICU Team
If you have questions about your loved one’s care, speak with the bedside nurse, who can coordinate with the medical team to provide updates or arrange a discussion with a specialist.
