The Care We Provide
Patients with serious or life-threatening injuries or illnesses are assigned a bed on the unit where some or all of the following may occur:
- Examination by a physician
- Blood tests
- EKG (heart tracing)
- IV Fluids
- A visit from a specialist
- Diagnostic testing such as: CT scan, doppler studies, ultrasound, MRI/MRA, X-ray
Test results will allow the emergency physician to determine appropriate treatment.
This care addresses non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses quickly and efficiently. Patients may experience:
- Exam by member of emergency team
- Blood tests
- Treatment and instructions for follow-up care with a doctor or specialist
Patients who have a serious injury or illness and need more intensive monitoring have access to critical/intensive care with intensive care units (ICUs) at Buffalo General Medical Center, Gates Vascular Institute, Golisano Children’s Hospital, Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital and Olean General Hospital.
At Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute, ICUs are segmented into specialized critical care units that include the Medical ICU (MICU) for critical illness; a Cardiovascular ICU (CCU) for cardiac intensive care; and a Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) dedicated to complex neurological cases like stroke and spinal cord injuries.
Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Golisano Children’s Hospital treats critically ill and injured children and provides services like ECMO and mechanical ventilation.

What to Expect from Your Care
Upon arrival, a nurse will ask about your symptoms, medications, medical history and vital signs. Based on that, patients are assigned a severity level, which helps identify who requires immediate and/or potentially life-saving attention. Patients requiring urgent care are treated first. You may be directed to the waiting room, but please notify the nurse immediately if you feel that your condition has changed since you first gave your health information.
Please be prepared to provide your name, address, email address, insurance information and primary care physician’s name. You will also be asked to sign a consent form, which gives our providers permission to treat you and bill your insurance carrier.
Visiting the Emergency Department may cause anxiety and fear. Patients and their family members want fast, effective care, and Kaleida Health’s goal is to treat all patients fairly, professionally and in a timely manner. As a Zero Tolerance Zone, absolutely no verbal or physical abuse of staff or those waiting to be seen will be tolerated. Those who do not comply will be asked to leave.
