What is Acute Medical Rehabilitation?
Acute Medical Rehabilitation, or MRU, provides intensive, hospital-based therapy for patients recovering from stroke, neurological injuries, orthopedic surgeries or medical debilitation. Patients participate in up to three hours of therapy per day under the supervision of a physiatrist and a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team.
Care is focused on rebuilding movement, communication, swallowing and daily skills while preparing patients and families for a safe return home.

Swallowing Evaluation and Treatment
VitalStim therapy to strengthen swallowing muscles when appropriate. Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing to assess safety with liquids and foods.
Medical and Supportive Services
Respiratory therapy, social work, nutrition, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology and chaplain services are available as needed.

Most patients remain in the MRU for approximately two to four weeks, depending on clinical needs and progress.
Patients typically participate in about three hours of therapy each day, five days per week.
The goal of acute rehabilitation is to discharge home whenever it is safe and appropriate. Your team will plan this with you from the start.
