Early Detection Saves Lives
Overview
Early detection is the most effective way to protect your breast health. Kaleida Health’s multidisciplinary team delivers expert care and guidance, from routine screenings to advanced diagnostic procedures, ensuring you feel informed, supported and empowered throughout your journey.
When Should You See Your Doctor?
It’s important to stay in tune with your body and speak with a healthcare provider if you notice any of the following:
-
A Lump in One or Both Breasts
-
Breast Pain or Tenderness
-
Nipple Discharge
-
A Nipple That Becomes Inverted
-
Redness, Puckering, or Other Skin Changes
Many breast changes are non-cancerous, but early assessment can provide peace of mind and enable prompt care if needed.
The Care We Provide
At Kaleida Health, our multidisciplinary breast health team includes radiologists, breast surgeons, oncologists and specialized nurses who collaborate to deliver coordinated, high-quality care.
Mammograms
Detect changes early, before an abnormal mass can be felt. We use 3D digital tomosynthesis for precise imaging.
Breast Density Measurement
Identifies high-risk breast tissue to guide screening and care.
Breast MRI
Captures multiple detailed images to evaluate conditions or assist with screening.
Breast Ultrasound
Clarifies findings from mammograms or physical exams.
Breast Biopsy
Removes tissue samples for lab analysis to confirm a diagnosis.
More About Mammography
A mammogram is a safe, low-dose X-ray that captures detailed images of breast tissue. At Kaleida Health, advanced 3D digital tomosynthesis allows radiologists to examine tissue one millimeter at a time for early detection.
The American College of Radiology (ACR) recommends women of average risk begin annual mammograms at age 40. Our team provides patient-centered care from screening and diagnosis to follow-up and treatment.
Mammography Services Include:
- Screening and diagnostic mammograms
- 3D tomosynthesis (Genius™ Platinum Program)
- Breast ultrasound
- Stereotactic breast biopsy
- Needle localization
Lowering Your Risk
While the exact cause of breast cancer is not fully understood, certain lifestyle choices can help lower your risk. If you have a personal or family history of breast cancer, talk with your provider about a personalized prevention strategy.
Get Screened
Stay current with mammograms and clinical breast exams. Early detection improves outcomes.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
Being overweight or obese, particularly after menopause, increases risk.
Eat a Nutritious Diet
Focus on fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains and healthy fats.
Stay Active
Aim for at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week.
Limit Alcohol
Alcohol consumption increases breast cancer risk.
Avoid Tobacco
Avoiding tobacco reduces risk for many cancers, including breast cancer.
Use Hormone Therapy Wisely:
If considering hormone replacement therapy (HRT), discuss risks with your provider.
