What Is Wound Care?

Wound care in the hospital setting focuses on treating wounds that are slow to heal or do not heal on their own. These wounds may last weeks or months and often require specialized care. Treatment addresses both the wound and the underlying conditions that may be preventing healing. At Kaleida Health, we offer advanced wound care at our new, state-of-the-art Geraldine Memmo Wound Care Center downtown, as well as at Olean General Hospital and Bradford Regional Medical Center. 

Why Do Some Wounds Need Extra Care?

Many medical conditions can affect the body’s ability to heal. These include increased age, obesity, diabetes, heart and vascular disease and cancer treatments.

When Should I Seek Wound Care?

If you have a history of non-healing wounds, seek care as soon as a wound develops. People with diabetes or vascular disease are at higher risk and should be evaluated early.

Untreated wounds can lead to infection. Serious infections may result in hospitalization, amputation or life-threatening complications. Contact a wound care specialist right away if you notice:

 

  • A rapid increase in pain, swelling or redness
  • Bad odor or heavy drainage from your wound
  • Fever, chills, nausea or vomiting

  • Testing may be done to assess blood flow or check for infection.

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy supports the body’s oxygen-dependent healing process. During treatment, patients breathe pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, allowing higher oxygen levels to reach damaged tissue. This promotes new blood vessel growth, enhances infection control and supports faster healing. Kaleida Health offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy at Olean General Hospital Wound Care.
