What is Orthopaedic & Spine Surgery?
Typically in medicine, surgery should be considered a last resort.
When it comes to trauma, injury or degenerative pain in the back, neck or joints, patients are looking for long-term solutions – not quick fixes.
Kaleida Health is proud to connect patients with the brightest minds and most leading-edge solutions for orthopaedic and spinal surgery.
You or a loved one may be seeking advanced orthopaedic or spinal care if you’re experiencing chronic numbness, tingling, muscle weakness or limb pain. You or a loved one may also be navigating the aftermath of a traumatic accident or injury.
The Care We Provide
Arthoscopic surgery
One of the most common orthopaedic procedures is an arthroscopy to repair inflamed or damaged joints. During the procedure, a camera is inserted through a very small incision (about a quarter of an inch). In a separate small incision, the surgeon inserts instruments to remove damaged ligaments or cartilage.
Hand, elbow and shoulder surgery
Orthopaedic surgeons focus on restoring function and relieving pain in the upper extremities, including care of carpal tunnel syndrome and rotator cuff tears.
Hip and knee revisions
In most cases, hip and knee replacements should function for 10-20 years. Due to time, injury, infection or wear on the joint, the implant function may deteriorate, causing pain, swelling, stiffness or instability. If this occurs, joint revision surgery may be indicated.
Joint replacement
As a result of years of working, arthritis, trauma or just general wear-and-tear, you could be a candidate for joint replacement.
Orthopaedic oncology
Orthopaedic oncology is the practice of treating tumors of the musculoskeletal systems. These tumors can be benign or malignant and can be in the bones or soft tissue like muscles. Treatment can range from active surveillance to surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy, depending on the status and location of the tumor.
Balloon kyphoplasty
In this procedure, tiny balloons are inserted into a fractured vertebrae and then inflated. The space created by the balloons is then filled with cement to support the bones and prevent further collapse.
Disc surgery
Our surgeons can treat lumbar disc ruptures with small tubes using the METRxTM Microendoscopic (METRxTM MED) system. Similar to the benefits of minimally invasive surgery, this technique uses smaller incisions and avoids muscle cauterization and dissection, which ultimately leads to quicker recovery and better patient outcomes. Patients often leave the hospital on the same day this procedure is performed.
Foraminotomy
For compressed or pinched nerves in the low back or neck, our surgeons offer a less invasive approach to treatment. Instead of performing a traditional, midline incision down the back, the surgeon places a small tube over the bony canal that is compressing the nerve root. Once the tube is placed, a small amount of bone can be removed, freeing the affected nerve from compression. Many patients comment on minimal recovery pain and are often able to return home within one day of the procedure.
Pedicle screws and interbody fusion
Minimally invasive technology has evolved so much that it’s now possible to insert fusion devices through a 26-mm tube, eliminating the need for large, open incisions. With help from imaging, the screws used to stabilize the spine and keep the interbody device in place are inserted through a small incision. For patients with pain on one side of the body, discogenic back pain or unilateral vertebral bone fractures, these minimally invasive approaches have optimized patient outcomes.
Vertebroplasty
A cutting-edge procedure that provides immediate pain relief by stabilizing osteoporotic compression fractures. The treatment is performed with local anesthesia and some mild sedation. It can also be used for stabilization of vertebral metastatic lesions and hemangiomas.
