About

There aren’t many places where a world-renowned structural heart surgeon and a leading brain surgeon regularly chat over lunch. At Gates Vascular Institute (GVI) — Kaleida Health’s center for heart, vein and brain & spine care — it’s the everyday norm.

Why is this important? At GVI, collaboration starts in shared spaces like the fishbowl, a communal area designed for early-morning coffee, group lunches and spontaneous idea exchanges. These relationships extend into the procedure rooms, where physicians consult on each other’s cases, driving smarter, faster and more innovative patient care.

That's a game changer for the patients of Western New York and beyond. Expert physicians, often in the same room, share insights that lead to breakthroughs in care. This approach underpins the revolutionary stroke care developed by Dr. Nick Hopkins – care that’s now recognized as the global gold standard. It’s also why Dr. Hopkins championed the creation of GVI over 15 years ago, enhancing Buffalo General Medical Center and fostering a culture of clinical collisions that continue to spark major advances in heart, vein, brain and spine care.

Today, world-leading physicians are drawn to GVI to drive even more clinical breakthroughs, and patients are drawn here to get the best possible care.

World-Renowned Physicians

Physicians at Gates Vascular Institute (GVI) are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in heart, vascular, brain and spine care. Many serve as faculty at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, advancing research, training the next generation of clinicians and bringing the latest medical discoveries directly to patients’ bedsides.

From complex cardiac and vascular procedures to advanced neurological and surgical care, GVI physicians are known for clinical expertise, innovation and a collaborative approach that drives the best possible outcomes for every patient.

Awards & Certifications

GVI is nationally and locally recognized for excellence in clinical care, patient safety and outcomes. Accolades from publications and accrediting organizations reflect our commitment to quality, research and patient-centered care. (Scrolling list)
