The Care We Provide
Critical care & monitoring
24/7 monitoring, respiratory support, infection management and advanced neonatal interventions. Our NICU provides around-the-clock monitoring to ensure each baby’s vital signs and health status are continuously tracked. Advanced infection management and specialized interventions allow our team to respond immediately to any medical needs, keeping critically ill and premature infants safe.
Neonatal surgery
Surgical interventions including laparoscopic, ENT, and other procedures for newborns. Our NICU provides surgical interventions for newborns requiring immediate or specialized care, including laparoscopic procedures, ENT surgeries and other delicate operations. Each procedure is supported by a multidisciplinary team of neonatologists, pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses to minimize risk and optimize recovery.
Respiratory & ventilation support
High-frequency ventilation, ECMO, nitric oxide therapy, surfactant replacement and non-invasive ventilation. Our NICU offers advanced respiratory therapies to support premature or critically ill infants. Options include high-frequency ventilation, ECMO, nitric oxide inhalation, surfactant replacement and non-invasive ventilation. These therapies are tailored to each baby’s specific needs to maximize lung function and overall outcomes.
Developmental & therapy support (NICU follow-up)
Physical, occupational and feeding therapy to support growth, development and milestones. Our NICU integrates developmental care into each baby’s treatment plan. Physical, occupational and feeding therapies help support growth and milestone achievement. Families are encouraged to participate, promoting bonding and long-term developmental success.
Neonatal Transport Team
Specialized ground and air transport for critically ill newborns across Western New York. Our 24/7 neonatal transport team safely transfers critically ill infants from across the region. Staffed by neonatal nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists and neonatologists when needed, the team stabilizes babies and provides rapid, safe transport to our Level IV NICU.
Family-centered care
Support for parents and families, including counseling, education and follow-up programs. We provide comprehensive support for families, including counseling, educational programs, sibling resources, and post-discharge follow-up. Our goal is to ensure parents feel confident, informed, and supported throughout their baby’s NICU journey. At Golisano Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, mothers who deliver a baby before 32 weeks gestation may be eligible for specialized maternal mental health support during their child’s NICU stay. Through screening and assessment, mothers identified as needing additional support are connected with trained mental health professionals who provide counseling, coping strategies, and referrals for continued care. This program focuses on maternal well-being, strengthening parent–infant bonding, and helping families navigate the emotional stress that can accompany a prolonged NICU hospitalization. Our goal is to ensure both baby and parent receive comprehensive, compassionate care during this critical time.

A Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides the highest level of care for critically ill newborns, including complex surgeries, advanced respiratory support and access to pediatric subspecialists 24/7.
Babies who are premature, have low birth weight, require surgery or have medical complications at birth may need NICU care.
