Leading with CARE Award Presented to Gary Stillman

Congratulations to Gary Stillman, occupational therapist in the Rehabilitation Department at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital who was recently recognized for leading with CARE. Recipients of the Leading with CARE award exemplify Kaleida Health values in their daily work, and go above and beyond for their patients, families and coworkers. Read the following statement that explains why Gary is so deserving of this award.

"I would like to recognize Gary Stillman. Gary is one of our occupational therapists; however, Gary consistently goes above and beyond his basic work duties. When it comes to quality improvement initiatives, research and process improvement, Gary is my go-to person. He takes the time to collect data, look at the current research and strives to have our rehab department meeting the best practice standards. He has been integral in our DNV Stroke Survey Accreditation as he was responsible for completion and tracking of all rehab-based reporting standards, such as the Modified Rankin Scale and the NIH Stroke Scale. He has taken the lead on ensuring compliance and has been instrumental in having the rehab team take the lead on providing these assessments at discharge and making sure any admission assessments missed were completed within 24 hours of admission. Gary’s passion for research and evidence based practice has made him the go-to guy for any pilot programs, such as the Nottingham Hip Fracture Scale that Dr. Ahmad asked him to pilot.  He has also been a resource for our physical therapists as we have rolled out an outcome measure for guiding our evaluation and discharge recommendations. Gary has multiple publications looking at frailty and piloting the Edmonton Frailty Scale predicting re-admissions and death. Gary is also the face of our pre-op orthopedic classes as well as being a clinic instructor to many, many students. His passion for teaching and continual improvement is truly admirable.

If that wasn’t enough, Gary also spent the bulk of the Christmas blizzard here at Suburban. He spent over 48 hours in the building with little sleep. He was emptying garbage’s, answering call lights and toileting patients. He did all of this without a single complaint, only worrying about the staff and patients he was here with. Gary is a wonderful employee who goes above and beyond in all that he does."

Thank you, Gary, for leading with CARE.
