The Kaleida Health Pharmacy Residency Program – the oldest in the region – is proud to celebrate 50 years of providing the highest level of training to pharmacists.
Since its inception at Buffalo General Medical Center in 1974, the program has expanded to other acute care sites and graduated 213 pharmacy residents. These residents play a critical role in patient care at Kaleida Health’s hospitals – including Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute, Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital and Oishei Children’s Hospital.
Pharmacy residents not only round on many different medical teams to provide medication insight and recommendations, but they complete research projects related to hospital goals, are part of the emergency response team for medical emergencies and participate in multidisciplinary committees. Pharmacy residents also participate in the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Teaching and Learning Certificate Program, which provides an advanced academic teaching certificate and faculty research mentors.
While not a requirement to practice pharmacy, residencies have become increasingly popular as pharmacists are seen as the medication experts. Kaleida Health currently offers postgraduate residency programs (Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1)) and second-year residency programs (Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY2)) in specialized areas of internal medicine, critical care and infectious diseases. Applications for each program are through a nationwide online program. Applicants must be a graduate of an accredited pharmacy school and demonstrate strong leadership skills, clinical knowledge and work experience.
As educational requirements increase, medical technology advances and the professional scope of pharmacists grows, Kaleida Health’s Pharmacy Residency Programs are well equipped to train pharmacists who can serve as the medication experts on the healthcare team while helping to advance patient care and train future pharmacists.
