Ending the Hepatitis C Epidemic Training: May 30, 2023

Erie County Department of Health is working with University at Buffalo and the Medical Society of Erie County to offer a training on Ending the Epidemic-Hepatitis C on Tuesday, May 30.

This 2-hour, in-person training at the Erie County Fire Training Academy is free and will be eligible for CME. This event is for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, medical office staff and clinicians interested in learning how to help patients who are at-risk for hepatitis C or who are living with hepatitis C. Dr. Anthony Martinez will teach this informative course: he is a clinical associate professor at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and a physician at Erie County Medical Center, where he is medical director of hepatology.

The acute hepatitis C incidence rate has more than doubled since 2013, and increased 15% in 2020 from 2019. During 2020, rates of acute hepatitis C were highest among males, persons 20-39 years of age, American Indian/Alaska Native persons, those who reported using injection drugs, and those living in the eastern and southeastern states.

In 2020, CDC published universal adult and pregnancy screening guidelines that recommend

  • Hepatitis C screening at least once in a lifetime for all adults aged ≥18 years and
  • Hepatitis C screening for all pregnant women during each pregnancy
