Buffalo Business First: Kaleida names new Oishei Children's Hospital president
Kaleida Health has named Dr. Stephen Turkovich president of John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital.

Turkovich, who replaces Allegra Jaros, has served since 2014 as chief medical officer at the hospital and for maternal and child health, as well as associated ambulatory enterprises.

He also has spent the past 16 years as a practicing doctor and pediatric hospitalist with UBMD Pediatrics and spent three years as chief quality and patient safety officer in the department of pediatrics.

Jaros, who served as president since 2014, is leaving the post in January to become president of Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Children’s Health Network in Jacksonville, Florida. She will remain at the hospital until year-end during a transition.

In a prepared statement, Kaleida president and CEO Don Boyd called Turkovich an “enthusiastic and steadfast” advocate for the region’s children and families.

“He is a thoughtful and well respected leader, a trusted medical expert and someone who works tirelessly to collaborate with organizations throughout Western New York to positively impact the health and well-being of our community.”

Turkovich joined the former Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo in 2006 as co-director of the newborn nursery. He earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees at the University at Buffalo, then spent three years at the University of Rochester for his pediatric residency at the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong. He also completed the Harvard Business School executive education program for managing health care delivery.

Oishei Children’s Hospital opened in 2017 on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus after nearly a century on High Street. An expansion is underway to increase total bed count to 191 through a $6.8 million project that will add a 12-bed unit for high-risk pregnancies on the seventh floor. The project is slated for completion next fall.

Children’s is the only freestanding pediatric hospital in New York state and among just 43 nationwide. It is the region’s only Level 1 pediatric trauma program and is also designated as the Regional Perinatal Center of Western New York and a Level IV neonatal intensive care unit.

Turkovich will manage daily hospital operations, including clinical and support services, as well as community physician relations, off-site pediatric and obstetric primary clinics.

He follows six other new hospital presidents named locally this year:

• Teresa Donohue was named CEO at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville, taking over as longtime leader Nils Gunnersen prepares to retire later this year. Donohue has served since 2009 as chief financial officer for Bertrand Chaffee and its on-site nursing home, the Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home.

• Beth Hughes became president in October at the Buffalo General Medical Center and the Gates Vascular Institute, both part of Kaleida Health. She came to the system from Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

• Martin Boryszak shifted to president in September at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, a Catholic Health hospital. He also serves as senior vice president of acute care services for system.

• Ken Morris took over at Brooks-TLC Hospital System in July, replacing Mary LaRowe as new president/CEO. He was vice president of operations since joining the system in 2018.

• Dr. Jill Owens was named president at Upper Allegheny Health System, part of Kaleida Health, taking over in May at the $176 million health system. She was chief medical officer.

• David Kobis became CEO in late May at Wyoming County Community Health System. Kobis came from a health-care consulting role with 30 years’ experience in rural health care, including prior executive posts with Fatima Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.
