The tentative agreement reached early on Oct. 3 between Kaleida Health and its union leaders calls for creating 500 full-time equivalent positions to meet state mandated staffing ratios.
When it comes to wages, workers — including registered nurses, clerical employees and professional employees — will receive a general increase of 4% this year and in each of the next two years.
Communications Workers of America (CWA1168) and 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East bargained a three-year deal with Kaleida covering 6,300 workers across the Buffalo health system. The deal is expected to cost Kaleida somewhere between $200 million and $500 million more over three years than the contract that ended this year.
The proposed contract, which goes through May 31, 2025, has not yet been released publicly, but CWA1168 shared highlights of the agreement on its website.

Highlights of the proposed Kaleida Health contract
- The CWA said staffing ratios were achieved for all inpatient nursing units, including the creation of about 500 FTEs. Those positions include 436 jobs Kaleida agreed to create earlier this summer as part of the state's mandated clinical staffing process plus another 65 new FTEs in professional, service, technical, clinical and clerical bargaining jobs.
- A new bonus/incentive program kicks in Dec. 18 that includes automatic bonus shifts on weekends with hourly pay ranging from $15 to $30 per hour.
- Workers will receive a 4% raise, retroactive to June 1, plus a general wage increase of 4% in each of the next two years. That's in addition to shift differentials and step increases for nurses and professional employees.
- In the area of benefits, employees will get improved prescription copays at retail pharmacies, as well as improvements to retirement and pension plans.
Ratification votes by the union workforce are expected in the coming weeks.
