Bradford Era: Hospital report shows outpatient visits high for local hospitals

Inpatients at medical facilities in McKean County are most likely to be females over the age of 75 with Medicare insurance, according to a recent state report on hospital facilities.

The data, part of the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4) released with numbers from the fourth quarter of 2023, show outpatient visits vastly outnumber inpatient cases, especially at Bradford Regional Medical Center.

According to the report, there were 574 inpatient cases in hospitals in McKean County. A spokesman for BRMC said there were 205 inpatient discharges during that quarter, and 22,114 outpatient service visits.

“The 22,000 number includes ER visits, our infusion visits (ambulatory care), laboratory, chemotherapy, imaging testing, occupational health, outpatient rehab, respiratory therapy, sleep lab and outpatient physician offices,” the spokesman said.

The PHC4 report noted 1,371 outpatient cases, counting far fewer categories of outpatient services.

Most inpatients fall into the 75 and older range, at 27.4%, followed by 45 to 64 at 21.4%, the ages 18 to 44 at 21.1%, then ages 65 to 75 at 19.2%, and younger than age 18 at 11%.

Females outnumbered males, but not by much, at 51.2% to 48.8%.

Nearly 48% of inpatients had Medicare insurance, while commercial insurance was second with nearly 30%, then Medicaid at 15.7%, other at 3.5% and self-pay at 3.3%.
