BGMC awarded designation as Center of Excellence in lung cancer care

Buffalo General Medical Center (BGMC) has been named a Center of Excellence for Lung Cancer by GO2 for Lung Cancer (GO2) in recognition of its commitment to patient-centered, evidence-based lung cancer care for the Western New York community.

An estimated 237,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer each year, and while it remains the leading cause of cancer deaths, survival rates continue to improve thanks to advances in early detection and treatment.

The designation recognizes hospitals that put patients at the center of every step of care, with clear communication and shared decision-making from diagnosis through treatment. It also reflects access to full oncology services, including medical, radiation, surgical oncology and pathology, along with strong adherence to evidence-based guidelines and coordinated, team-based treatment planning.

“BGMC is dedicated to providing the highest quality care,” said Karen Blount, MS, RN, NEA-BC, president at Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute. “This recognition reflects the way our teams come together every day to support patients and families through a difficult diagnosis, and to deliver coordinated, compassionate care close to home.”

BGMC is also recognized for its structured low-dose CT lung cancer screening program, aligned with national standards, supporting early detection and timely follow-up care.
