What is Aquatic Therapy?
Aquatic therapy at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Buffalo leverages water’s properties—buoyancy, resistance and warmth—to help children improve physical function, mobility and strength. Our therapeutic pool is heated to 94°F and includes railings, stairs and a mechanical lift to accommodate different mobility needs. The Care We Provide
Aquatic therapy sessions
Children receive one-on-one or small group sessions to achieve goals such as: muscle strengthening, improved balance and ambulation, increased endurance, increased joint range of motion, decreased pain and improved function on land.
Therapy sessions are conducted in a pool adapted with railings, stairs and a mechanical lift. Water temperature is maintained at 94°F to reduce muscle stiffness and support relaxation.
Certain conditions may prevent participation, including:
- Uncontrolled seizures
- Presence of a tracheostomy or PICC line
- Open or unhealed wounds/incisions
A referral from your child’s pediatrician or specialist is required. Our team at GCH Buffalo will coordinate scheduling and provide intake instructions to ensure the session meets your child’s needs.
